The Magic Bed Jacket

I wouldn't call this especially magical when you have a lot of curve hemming to do, but it is relatively easy to make.  Originally published in a 1930's edition of Fashion Service magazine (I don't remember which one), published by the Women's Institute of Domestic Arts and Sciences.

If you make one, let me see!

  3. I suppose you could make this is today's fleece for a really cozy jacket!

    1. To add to that you could finish the raw edges with a wide blanket stitch rather than hemming. Close with a button and tab or ties. Patterned fleece would look good. Good idea for quilt groups looking for a nursing home charity project.

  4. Why does everyone think this is only for old ladies?? I am making this for myself to throw on my shoulders, since my office is in the basement. A cape is a lot faster to put on and take off than anything with sleeves. Perfect!!

  5. I just want to say thank you. I have a friend who recently lost both of her legs and I have been looking for something like this. All I could fine was a ponchos, shawls or long capes. She said her shoulders get chilled but everything is to long. I wanted something pretty and comfortable. She's going to love it bless you! I'm going to make one tonight and take it to her tomorrow.

  6. To make things easier, regarding all the binding of the edges, I’m wondering if lining it would make it easier! Just a thought.

    1. I just saw this post. Good idea about lining, but I'm going to try this and make it reversible with 2 different pieces of light weight flannel. Sew it up right sides together, leave a small opening, turn it inside out add a button hole and button. For someone bed ridden, this would give them 2 color options to cheer up their day.
